Audit of the LSC
The Legal Services Commission has come under fire after an audit of their work that was published last week.
The National Audit office spoke out against the government-funded commission, blaming the quango for its overspending on fees and administration. In particular the NAO criticised the way the LSC funds criminal legal aid, and said that there should be more research and understanding of the criminal system in place.
The current economic climate means that there is more pressure on the LSC to provide funding for charities and solicitors who undertake advice work in areas such as housing and homelessness, employment rights and welfare benefits.
The Commission is now being forced to reclaim overpaid fees to the sum of £25million.
