Law graduates - still a huge benefit to employers
Heidi Sandy, chairwoman of the Law Society's junior lawyers division recently indicated that graduate recruitment in the legal sector is on the up, saying that firms that didn't offer training contracts two years ago are now recruiting and those graduates that were deferred are starting their contracts, freeing up places in firms that may have been 'on hold'.
Robert Addy, partner at Sheffield legal recruitment specialists CRA Consulting says “Heidi also said that the market has always been and is still very tough, with fierce competition, and this is certainly what we are seeing in South Yorkshire. As in any market, there are real benefits arising from recruiting graduates into legal practice – knowledge of the law naturally, but employers often miss the other benefits that graduates can bring to their business.”
In his recent review of higher education funding, Lord Brown said: "A degree is of benefit both to the holder, through higher levels of social contribution and higher lifetime earnings, and to the nation, through higher economic growth rates and the improved health of society." Robert agrees, and comments futher: “Graduates can add exceptional value to any business. Primarily, they have great enthusiasm and are highly motivated. Fresh from university and studies, graduates are usually keen to apply the skills they have learned, but are still enthusiastic learners and become productive very quickly, often at a much faster pace than employers expect. Higher education teaches people to be flexible and adaptable and, particularly in the current climate, this can be an invaluable skill. Graduates generally come with no baggage – no pre-conceived ideas – but at the same time are skilled in I.T. and knowledgeable about current business practice, enabling them to contribute effectively.
If a business is looking for people who want to develop their career and succeed, or is planning succession, there is no doubt that recruiting new talent can be a speedy and cost effective way of bringing in energy, enthusiasm and fresh ideas.”
