Successful businesses planned!
Whatever the size of your business, and whatever business you are in, forward planning is an essential part of your success. Planning your workfoce is no different if you want to avoid impulse recruitment, which - whilst posting a job on a web site and dealing with the influx of CVs hastily may seem attractive – does not always lead to getting the best person for the job – and can often mean missing the one person you are really looking for if they have not had time to see it!
Effective recruitment of staff can often take far more time than anticipated. From the point when the position is agreed, it usually takes around 4 – 8 weeks to recruit, allowing time for planning the selection process, writing the job specification, grading, preparing documentation, advertising, shortlisting and interviewing. Then of course there is the waiting whilst the successful candidate works out any notice. In fact it can regularly take longer, so businesses looking to recruit in the new year should ideally start planning now.
In the current economic climate, planning is more important than ever as business leaders become acutely aware of the fitness of their organisation and its needs. Having a plan in place means that a business is in a better position to face the challenges ahead – even if that means changing the plan!
Recruitment is affected by both internal and external factors and business leaders are more on top of the effects of these on their organisations than ever. The changing economy and environment – will certainly mean a changing workforce. New legislation (Equality Act & Agency Worker Regulations for example), evolving patterns of work and new perspectives on work will all need to be taken into account.
Fail to plan and plan to fail – as the saying goes, may seem a little harsh, but it is certainly true that those managers who have their new year recruitment strategies in place now will certainly be first out of the starting blocks in 2011.
