Unemployment total falls to 2.5 million
A record number of people are in work after another fall in unemployment, the total falls by 37,000. Figures from The Office for National Statistics show Yorkshire and Humber have recorded positive figures, with a 12,000 drop in unemployment down to 241,000 people.
Chief executive Kevin Green says: "This is an outstanding performance by the UK jobs market. It would be easy to get distracted by recent headlines around the big high street names such as Comet, HMV, Blockbuster and Jessops going under, but the fact remains that the UK jobs market is continuing to improve, the overall trend is one of job creation and we are outperforming our European neighbours.”
It’s welcoming to see long-term unemployment falling and the number of young people claiming jobseeker’s allowance dropping again, figures show there is an increase in the current job market.
