Swedish furniture giant IKEA have announced plans to build a mega store in Sheffield on the industrial site close to Meadowhall. IKEA have started discussions with Sheffield City Council over the proposal, the reaction from the public seems to be positive.
Ian Nicholson said "An IKEA store in Sheffield will be a major boost to the whole city, not just in terms of jobs, but also by adding to the total retail offer”. If plans go ahead the new store would create 700 new jobs to the Sheffield area, 500 jobs in store plus 200 construction jobs. Ikea have been looking to build a store in Sheffield for many years as Sheffield retailers have to travel to Nottingham and Leeds.
