How To Dress To Impress At Interview Stage
In this materialistic society there is no hiding the fact that looks matter. From what hairstyle you have to the type of shoes that you wear it has become increasingly important to “dress for success”.
There are many musts at interview stage but I would argue that how you dress and present yourself is the most important. It takes an average of 7 seconds for an employer to make their first impression – so make it a good one!
Most employers in corporate environments are not looking for fashionable or trendy employees, this is a common misconception. In fact it can be quite the opposite, brightly coloured ties and funky hairdos can be quite off-putting and give the impression that you are uncommitted or not sincere about the interview.
Your appearance should complement your CV and should boost your chances of employment. If it be matching your shoes to your outfit or just wearing a watch, pay attention to the finer details, make an effort to give yourself a fighting chance. If it came down to two candidate but one was better presented, who would you choose?
The saying goes you should dress for the job you want not the job you have. It will enable your interviewer to visualise you progressing in their company. If you were dressed similarly to your interviewer they are more likely to take you seriously and speak to you on their level.
As well as looking the part it is just as important to always be clean and tidy, you will not find a well earning professional with stains on their clothes. In fact most senior professionals have extra shirts in their office, for those "just in case" moments.
Lastly make sure go you go in with confidence. At interviews confidence is key, if you’re not confident in your abilities how will your employer be? Something as simple as buying a new suit can be a great way to boost your confidence. And why shouldn’t you be confident, you have been brought in for interview so on paper you are the right candidate - partnered with enough interview preparation and a sharp appearance it’s the formula for success.
